Mobile app developers will likely bear the brunt of the impending crackdown by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for illegally collecting data on children and violating COPPA.

Citing evidence of fake Facebook profiles, the Federal Trade Commission said today that it had rejected a company’s application to draw on the social graph in order to confirm people’s identity.

Many developers began holding their breath when changes to COPPA, the federal rule related to children’s online privacy, went into effect in July. Pretty much every app catering to children under 13 was in violation of the law, complained people across the software industry, and it was only a matter of time before the federal government would start handing down big fines.

Parenting is always challenging, and sometimes parents are divided on different topics. One of those topics that can be divisive and is highly talked about is internet safety. Today, children of all ages are exposed to the internet through school and friends. Even as young as kindergarten children are being taught classes on technology, including internet search engines. Those who provide information, games and other media online know it too. Children are targets of marketing campaigns, statistical data and more.

The Federal Trade Commission recently amended rules governing the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) to afford greater protections to a child’s Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

In new guidance on its online privacy rule for children, the Federal Trade Commission on Thursday pushed companies to voluntarily adopt protections for teens as well, continuing a crusade that attorneys fear will lead to enforcement actions under the agency's authority to police what it considers unfair or deceptive practices.
