Aristotle Supports Federal Trade Commission December Findings on Age Verification of Restricted Movie Trailers Online
WASHINGTON, DC – Aristotle, the global leader in identity verification, today offers strong support for the age-verification findings in the Federal Trade Commission’s December 2009 report, “Marketing Violent Entertainment to Children: A Sixth Follow-up Review of Industry Practices in the Motion Picture, Music Recording & Electronic Game Industries.” The report outlines a number of new developments since the last follow-up in 2007, including the accessibility of movie trailers featuring restricted content on the Internet.
“The FTC’s most recent report highlights some important changes in movie trailers and the way they are now distributed online,” said John Aristotle Phillips, CEO of Aristotle. “As technology continues to evolve and children continue to be its savviest users, it is critical that we take the necessary steps to ensure that they are protected from age-inappropriate content online.”
The use of R-rated trailers, also known as “red band” trailers, by film studios as an online marketing tool has exploded in popularity in recent years. Aristotle’s technology platform, Integrity, is the most widely accepted identity and age verification service deployed for instantly verifying government-issued IDs for citizens of 152 nations, and is implemented successfully by many studios as an age-gate for these restricted trailers.
“Ultimately, we help smart marketers create a space where they can use grown-up themes to have a grown-up discussion with an audience comprised of grown-ups. The alternative is to dumb it down because there might be a 13 year old in the audience – someone who can’t buy your product anyway,” said Phillips, who also served on the Internet Safety Technical Task Force. “Integrity sets the industry standard when it comes to age verification, and we look forward to continuing to work with the FTC and our friends the MPAA as well as individual studios to ensure that restricted content stays that way.”

(CNN) -- Status updates, photo tagging and FarmVille aren't just for adults or even teenagers anymore.
Researchers say a growing number of children are flouting age requirements on sites such as Facebook and MySpace, or using social-networking sites designed just for them.
Facebook and MySpace require users to be at least 13. But they have no practical way to verify ages, and many young users pretend to be older when signing up.
Some scientists worry that pre-adolescent use of the sites, which some therapists have linked to Internet addiction among adults, could be damaging to children's relationships and brains.
But many other experts say there's not any solid research to back that up and that most children seem to use social-media sites in moderation, and in positive ways.
"For the most part, although there's so much press about all the bad things they're doing, much of what they do on these sites is stuff they would be doing anyway," said Kaveri Subrahmanyam, a professor of psychology at California State University-Los Angeles.
In two surveys reported this year by Pew Internet Research -- of 700 and 935 teens, respectively -- 38 percent of respondents ages 12 to 14 said they had an online profile of some sort.
According to MPAA advertising guidelines, if a movie producer or
distributor creates an adult site to advertise an R- or NC-17-rated
movie, the site “must be accessible only through a suitable
